Czech Republic holidays give you two very different sides to a break – the energy of Prague and a quieter landscape of rivers, forests and small towns.
Prague highlights
Prague is often the main draw to the Czech Republic, with one of the most recognisable skylines in Europe. You’ve got Prague Castle overlooking the city, a series of bridges crossing the Vltava River and a mix of historic buildings that are easy to explore on foot. It’s a city where you can see a lot without needing to plan every detail in advance.
Beer culture
Beer is a big part of everyday life here, with a history that goes back centuries. The country is known as the home of Pilsner, and you’ll find everything from traditional pubs to more unusual experiences like beer spas and festivals. Plus, prices are often lower than elsewhere in Europe – a standard lager will typically only set you back a couple of euros.
Countryside escapes
Beyond the cities, the Czech Republic opens up into quieter, more idyllic scenery. Areas like South Bohemia offer forests, lakes and hiking routes, while Moravia brings a different feel with rivers and countryside stretching towards the Slovakian border. It’s a good option if you want to balance time in the city with some fresh air and outdoor activities.
Best places to stay in the Czech Republic
Prague
Prague is the standout choice for most trips and one of the best Czech cities to visit if you want everything in one place. It works well for city breaks and weekend trips, with plenty to see in a compact, walkable area. There’s a wide range of places to stay, from low-cost boltholes to luxury hotels, so it’s easy to book for your budget – just keep in mind that prices rise during peak times like the Christmas markets.
Karlovy Vary
Karlovy Vary is a good option if you’re looking to slow things down. Known for its thermal springs, it’s well-suited for spa breaks and wellness retreats. Stays here tend to focus on relaxation, with spa hotels and quieter surroundings, though this can mean higher nightly rates depending on the level of comfort you choose.
Český Krumlov
Český Krumlov is a smaller, more traditional stop that feels very different to Prague. It’s known for its historic centre and relaxed pace, with plenty of things to do centred around walking, sightseeing and riverside views. It takes a bit more planning to reach – getting to Český Krumlov from Prague usually involves a pre-arranged transfer – but that extra effort often means fewer crowds if you stay overnight.
Brno
Brno is a lesser‑visited city, but worth considering if you want something more low‑key. It has a lived‑in feel, with cafés, local restaurants and cultural spots that suit shorter city breaks. Prices here are often lower than in Prague, which helps if you're trying to keep costs down while still seeing a different side of the country.

Why we love the Czech Republic
Here are some top tips from our team
Expert recommendation
On a hot summer’s day in Prague, take the tram down the river to the Žluté lázně, also known as The Yellow Spa. This chilled-out riverside complex has everything from beach volleyball to tiki-style bars, watersports, and special events in summer like an open-air cinema. There’s a section of the river to swim in, and a splash pool for kids too. - Amabel Buck
Non-touristy activities
For a less obvious side of the Czech Republic, look beyond Prague’s Old Town and head for the places locals usually escape to. Hike the sandstone trails of Bohemian Switzerland, explore the rock formations of Český ráj, or go underground in the Moravian Karst, home to caves and the dramatic Macocha Abyss. For slower city breaks, try Brno for a younger creative scene, or Mikulov and the Pálava hills for wine, castle views and countryside that feels far from the usual tourist trail.
Free things to do
Some of the best free things to do in the Czech Republic offer the best photo opportunities. In Prague, stroll across Charles Bridge early, climb up to Letná Park or Riegrovy Sady for skyline views, explore Vyšehrad’s fortress grounds, or visit Wallenstein Garden when it’s open. Beyond the capital, wander colourful towns like Telč or Olomouc, or spend an afternoon by the river in Český Krumlov.
Czech Republic FAQs
Despite being a member of the European Union, the Czech Republic doesn’t use the Euro. The official currency is the Czech Koruna (CZK). While premium hotels and high-end restaurants widely accept major international credit cards, we recommend carrying some local currency for smaller purchases and tipping.
May, June, and September offer the most comfortable climate for exploring the cities, with the added benefit of avoiding the peak summer crowds. However, December is a popular time for a luxury weekend break, as the Medieval squares of Prague and Brno host some of Europe’s most atmospheric festive markets.
The country benefits from an excellent, reliable rail network that connects Prague to Brno and other major cities. For destinations like Karlovy Vary or Český Krumlov, arranging a private driver through your hotel is the most seamless and comfortable option, allowing you to enjoy the scenic Bohemian countryside at your own pace.
In premium establishments, a service charge is sometimes included in the final bill. If it isn’t, a tip of around 10% is customary and expected for good service. It’s standard practice to hand the tip directly to the waiter or ask them to add it to the card machine, rather than leaving cash on the table.
