Croatia Holidays

Holidays to Croatia take you to one of Europe’s most talked-about destinations, known for its clear-water islands, recognised historic sites and character-filled cities.

Why Croatia is worth a visit

Croatia has comfortably earned its place alongside Europe’s better-known hotspots. You’ll find layers of history that stand up to Italy, islands that rival Greece for good looks, and a mix of beaches and evening spots that suit both relaxed and lively trips. Much of the country is covered in mountains, forests and protected national parks, which adds to its appeal. For a standout day out, a trip to the Plitvice Lakes brings together woodland paths and cascading waterfalls that feel far removed from busy resort areas.

History at a glance

Croatia’s past is easy to explore, with well-preserved landmarks across the country. In the north, close to Italy, there are elegant Venetian buildings and Roman remains, including the impressive amphitheatre in Pula. Head south and Dubrovnik’s Old Town is the main draw, famous for its Medieval streets and fortified walls. Walk through the narrow lanes, step inside the cathedral and follow the city walls for wide-open views across the Adriatic.

Exploring Croatia’s islands

Croatia’s coastline stretches for around 4,000 kilometres, thanks to more than 1,200 islands dotted along the shore. The Dalmatian Islands are especially popular for sailing holidays, with calm bays, quiet coves and traditional fishing villages along the way. If you’re staying in Dubrovnik or Split, it’s easy to take a boat trip and visit a few islands in a day. Or choose islands like Brac if you’re after a slower pace and a more laidback feel.

Croatia FAQs

The currency used in Croatia is the Euro.

How much to budget on holiday to Croatia depends on what kind of holiday you’re after. If you want to go all in with All Inclusive, you can find some great budget-friendly three or four-star hotels, then you won’t have to take any other spending money, unless you want to eat outside of your hotel, pay for any activities or buy souvenirs. If you go Half Board, Bed and Breakfast or Self Catering, it’ll be even cheaper when you book, but you’ll need to budget for food and drink when you’re there. On average, a meal will cost you about €15-20 per person. Budgeting around €50-60 a day should be enough for eating out, plus a few drinks and ice-creams.

If you’re after a week in a peaceful fishing village, Brac or Lopud Island are great choices. Hvar’s livelier and has a reputation for busy bars, restaurants and nightlife. Or, for a remote retreat, half of Mjlet is a national park and is all about the natural beauty.
