Aerial view of Burgas coastline, Bulgaria, featuring a long seaside pier, sandy beach, Black Sea shoreline, Sea Garden park and modern city skyline.

Bourgas area holidays combine long sandy beaches, historic towns and easy access to some of Bulgaria’s best-known Black Sea resorts.

A stretch worth seeking out

The Bourgas area sits along a sun-soaked corner of Bulgaria’s Black Sea coast. At its heart is Bourgas city, but it’s the beach resorts dotted north and south of here that draw most visitors. With long sandy shores, family-friendly resorts and easy access to cultural sights, this part of the coast offers plenty of choice for a seaside break.

Busy beaches and lively resorts

Sunny Beach is the area's best-known holiday spot, and for good reason. Expect a long Blue Flag beach, plenty of watersports and one of Bulgaria's liveliest nightlife scenes. Just along the coast, Nessebar adds a dose of history alongside its beaches, while St Vlas offers a quieter atmosphere, sea views and easy access to the action when you want it.

Quieter corners of the coast

If you're looking for somewhere a little more laidback, there are plenty of alternatives. Obzor is popular with families thanks to its relaxed pace, while Duni is known for its smart hotels and peaceful setting. Pomorie stands out for its salt lake and traditional seaside feel, and Tsarevo offers a slower rhythm away from the larger resorts.

Bourgas area FAQs

Most visitors use pre-booked transfers, taxis or shuttle services from Bourgas Airport. Sunny Beach, Nessebar, St Vlas and Pomorie are all within relatively easy reach. Pre-booked transfers are often the simplest option for families and larger groups, while local buses can offer a lower-cost alternative during the day.

Many of the main resorts are connected by regular bus services, and organised excursions cover most popular attractions. Hiring a car can be useful if you'd like to explore smaller coastal towns, nature reserves or more remote beaches at your own pace.

Tipping is appreciated but not mandatory. Many visitors leave around 5-10% for good service if a service charge has not already been included in the bill. It's worth checking restaurant receipts first, particularly in larger tourist areas.

St Vlas, Pomorie and Sinemorets are better choices if you're looking for a more relaxed atmosphere. While Sunny Beach offers the widest range of entertainment, it can be much busier, especially during the height of summer. Staying slightly outside resort centres can also help you find a quieter base.
