Tenerife’s famous resorts vs the better-value alternatives

Costa Adeje, Playa de las Americas and Los Cristianos are among Tenerife's most popular resorts. But popularity doesn't always equal value. Sometimes you're paying for a better location. Sometimes you're paying for more facilities. And sometimes you're simply paying for a famous resort name.

That’s the idea behind Sundeals holiday dupes. We’re highlighting destinations that offer many of the same holiday experiences as popular hotspots but could give you more for your money. They’re not exact copies and prices will always depend on when you travel, but they’re worth comparing before paying extra for Tenerife’s biggest resort names on your next package holiday.

Love Costa Adeje? Try Puerto de la Cruz

At a glance…

  • Established hotels across different budgets

  • More local places to eat and drink

  • Easy access to Mount Teide

  • Less of your budget spent on location

Costa Adeje has earned its reputation as one of Tenerife’s most popular resorts. It’s home to stylish hotels, smart seafront promenades and a wide choice of restaurants, making it a favourite with families and couples alike. But when everyone wants to stay there, prices tend to be higher particularly during school holidays and other peak travel periods.

If you're choosing Costa Adeje for the hotel, the pool and somewhere nice to grab dinner after sunset, Puerto de la Cruz might tick more boxes than you'd think. On Tenerife’s greener northern coast, it combines established hotels with colourful streets, local restaurants and a more traditional feel. You'll still find beaches, pools and plenty to do. You're simply paying less for the location.

Where your money goes further

In Costa Adeje, part of the price can come from it being in high demand. Puerto de la Cruz gives you the opportunity to put more of your budget towards the bits you'll actually remember – whether that's a better room, upgrading to All Inclusive or a few extra meals out. Its mix of tourist favourites and local restaurants also makes it easier to choose where and how much you spend. For many travellers, that's where the better value lies. The hotel, food and experiences often play a bigger role in the holiday than the postcode itself.

Is the extra spend worth it?

One of Costa Adeje’s biggest draws is its reliable south-coast sunshine and polished resort feel. Puerto de la Cruz offers plenty in return. But if guaranteed beach weather and a modern resort atmosphere sit high on your wishlist, the extra spend may still be worthwhile, especially as Tenerife's north can feel cooler and cloudier at times, particularly during winter.

Love Playa de las Americas? Try Golf del Sur

At a glance…

  • The same sunny south-coast setting

  • Hotels and pools without the party premium

  • A calmer evening scene

  • More budget left for the extras you want

Playa de las Americas is one of Tenerife’s best-known resorts, attracting visitors with its lively nightlife, huge choice of bars and restaurants and busy beach scene. It’s made for holidaymakers who want plenty happening from morning until late.

But if you prefer your evenings to end with a sunset cocktail rather than a 2am dancefloor, Golf del Sur could be the smarter-value choice. It sits on the same southern side of Tenerife and offers plenty of hotels, restaurants and places to unwind, but with a noticeably slower pace. You’re not necessarily getting less holiday; you’re simply not paying for a party scene you might not use.

Where your money goes further

Nightlife, entertainment and busy beachfronts all add to Playa de las Americas' appeal. But if those aren't priorities, Golf del Sur could help your budget stretch further. Depending on where you stay, that could mean upgrading your room, choosing a better board basis or simply keeping more spending money for while you're away. For some travellers, that extra value can have a bigger impact on the overall holiday than the resort itself. It's worth comparing what the same budget gets you in each location before booking.

Is the extra spend worth it?

Playa de las Americas may justify the higher price if busy beaches, late-night bars and plenty of entertainment are high on your holiday wishlist. Golf del Sur doesn't offer the same nightlife scene, so paying more for Playa de las Americas could still represent good value if that's a key part of your trip.

Love Los Cristianos? Try Puerto Santiago

At a glance...

  • Hotels across a range of price points

  • Sunshine and coastal scenery

  • A less in-demand resort location

  • More budget for your room or board basis

Los Cristianos has long been one of Tenerife's most popular resorts, attracting families and couples with its beaches, waterfront restaurants and easygoing atmosphere. It's a reliable all-rounder, offering plenty to do without feeling as lively as neighbouring Playa de las Americas.

Puerto Santiago offers many of those same qualities, but in a calmer setting on Tenerife's west coast. You'll still find beaches, hotels and plenty of places to eat and drink, but the pace of life feels slower and less crowded. The resort is also close to the famous Los Gigantes cliffs, giving it a scenic edge that many visitors don't expect. For travellers who don’t need everything on their doorstep, it could offer similar beach holiday appeal without the price attached to one of Tenerife’s best-known resorts.

Where your money goes further

One reason Los Cristianos maintains its higher prices is convenience. Its beaches, restaurants, shops and transport links are all within easy reach, but that may not be worth paying extra for if you plan to spend most of your time at the hotel or exploring the island. Choosing Puerto Santiago could mean stretching the same budget a little further. Depending on the hotel and departure dates, that extra value could go towards a better room, an upgraded board basis or even a longer stay.

Is the extra spend worth it?

Los Cristianos remains a popular choice because of its balance of beaches, restaurants and day-to-day amenities. There's plenty going on without feeling as busy as neighbouring Playa de las Americas, making it an easy option for families, couples and first-time visitors to Tenerife. If you want a resort with lots of choice on your doorstep and don't plan on venturing far, the extra spend may still be worthwhile. But if your priority is simply sunshine, a good hotel and a beach holiday, Puerto Santiago could offer better overall value.

The smarter swap?

Tenerife's biggest resorts are popular for a reason, but part of what you're paying for is their popularity, location and convenience. That's worth it if you'll make the most of it. If not, Puerto de la Cruz, Golf del Sur and Puerto Santiago can offer a similar holiday experience for less. Whether you're booking a winter sun holiday, family getaway or a beach break, it's worth comparing resorts before booking.

In many cases, the difference isn't the hotel itself but the location. A resort that's more established, more central or simply in higher demand will often come with a higher price tag. One thing to remember is the smartest holiday dupe isn't always the cheapest. It's the one that gives you the best value for the holiday you actually want.
